Life with Arthritis

La vida junto a la Artritis

1. What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Understanding the disease and its impact on daily life

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty of movement. It affects not only physically but also emotionally, as it can limit daily activities such as cooking, working, or enjoying time with family.

Although there is no cure, there are treatments and lifestyle habits that help improve quality of life. Nutrition, gentle exercise, and emotional support are fundamental pillars for those of us living with this condition.

2. My personal experience: Cooking with arthritis

When I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, I thought I would have to give up my passion for cooking. But I learned to adapt: I changed some utensils, organized my space better, and learned to ask for help. Now I want to share my tips and recipes so that you too can enjoy cooking, no matter the difficulties.

3. Practical tips for cooking with arthritis

  • Plan your weekly menu: This reduces daily effort and avoids improvisation.
  • Use ergonomic utensils: Thick, non-slip handles and electric tools (choppers, blenders).
  • Prepare ingredients while seated: Use a high chair or stool to avoid straining your legs.
  • Choose simple recipes: One-pot or one-tray dishes to simplify cleaning.
  • Freeze individual portions: This way you'll have food ready for days of more pain.
  • Take frequent breaks: Listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard.
  • Organize your kitchen: Keep frequently used items within reach and heavy items at a comfortable height.

4. Recommended and avoided foods in an anti-inflammatory diet

Recommended foods:

  • Leafy green vegetables (spinach, kale, swiss chard)
  • Red fruits (blueberries, strawberries, cherries)
  • Oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel)
  • Nuts and seeds (walnuts, chia, flaxseed)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Turmeric and ginger
  • Garlic and onion

Foods to avoid:

  • Ultra-processed foods, cured meats, and fried foods
  • Refined sugar and industrial pastries
  • Soft drinks and sugary drinks
  • Excessive red meat

5. Daily routines and habits to improve quality of life

  • Gentle exercises: Hand mobilizations, stretching, and short walks.
  • Adequate rest: Prioritize sleep and breaks throughout the day.
  • Hydration: Drink enough water.
  • Lean on your support system: Don't hesitate to ask family and friends for help.
  • Take care of your emotional health: Meditation, mindful breathing, and activities that relax you.
